Unconfirmed Banksy Mural Appears in SoHo

NEW YORK—The elusive British street artist Banksy may have started a large mural on a wall in SoHo in New York, reports the New York Times.  Featuring a rat holding an umbrella, it repeats the theme of a similar work on a wall at Grand and Wooster Streets, with a rat donning an "I Heart NY" t-shirt. That mural is believed to be a collaboration between Banksy and the outdoor advertising company Colossal Media, which put up both murals but declined to comment on Banksy's involvement.

David Choe, an artist represented by Banksy's gallery, Lazarides, identified the work as Banksy's, although a representative for Banksy did not respond to inquiries about the mural.

London's Lazarides gallery is currently holding a pop-up exhibition of work by its artists at 282 Bowery. That show, which does not include contributions by Banksy, is scheduled to close on October 12. Also, five works by Banksy that had not been authenticated failed to sell at auction in London last weekend.
