NEW YORK—The latest court ruling in the ongoing battle over the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum's Jolika collection of art from Papa New Guinea has come from the New York State Supreme Court, the New York Times reports.
A judge ruled last Thursday that Sotheby's could take possession of 54 works from the collection as collateral for its $25 million loan to John Friede, a de Young trustee and the owner of the collection who has not yet repaid the auction house. The judge placed a restraining order on another 99 works while they are being disputed between Sotheby’s and Friede’s brothers, who are demanding the art in lieu of $30 million that Friede had promised to them to settle a family inheritance dispute but has not yet paid. |
