20-20 Vision / Antigua

By Philip D. Paige

Published: September 1, 2008
Antigua—First there was the test match, then there was the one-day international... and then there was Twenty20: New cricket, in which (bear with me) each team bowls 20 overs in a single innings. In other words, the match lasts only three hours, and nobody dozes off. Now, add another 20—as in, $20 million—to the mix. This is the pot financier Sir Allen Stanford put up for his England vs. West Indies series that kicks off November 1 at the cricket ground he built in Antigua. With local legend Sir Viv Richards on board, the aim is to revive the glory of the sport. And to keep us all awake.
