LONDON— After 60 British artists wrote in to the Times (London) yesterday, calling on the nation to help the National Galleries of Scotland and London's National Gallery keep two Titian paintings in the country, the first major donation has been made in the campaign, BBC News reports.

The Art Fund has pledged £1 million ($1.75 million) for the purchase of Diana and Actaeon, the largest donation in the charity's 105-year history. The Duke of Sutherland is offering the work to the two galleries for £50 million; if they raise the money by New Year's Eve, he will offer the other painting in question, Diana and Callisto, for sale for the same price. If the galleries do not raise the money, the paintings may be sold on the open market.

John Leighton, director of the National Galleries of Scotland, called the Art Fund's grant "a very generous donation." David Barrie, director of the fund, said: "Today we have put our money on the table. Now others must come together if this extraordinarily important painting is to be kept where it belongs."
