Japan is the focus of the 12thedition of Paris Photo,which is set to attract 40,000visitors to the Carrousel duLouvre from November 13through 16. BelievingJapanese photography to beunderpriced and poised for aboom, the fair organizers haveinvited 14 galleries from Tokyoand Osaka, 8 of which showcontemporary work exclusively.In all, more than half thefair’s 86 dealers are showingJapanese material, at pricesranging from €2,500($3,600) for small (22-by-17-centimeter) color prints fromRinko Kawauchi at Tokyo’sFoil Gallery, up to $150,000for the refined black-and-whiteimages of HiroshiSugimoto at Fifty OneFine Art Photography ofAntwerp. Although the majorityof the fair’s dealers arefrom the West—including theU.S., which leads with 18—theevent is casting its net eastwardfrom India to Australia:Nature Morte of New Delhi,which is showing work byDayanita Singh, and StillsGallery of Sydney, which haswork by Australians TrentParke and Petrina Hicks,are making their Paris Photodebut.
