NEW YORK—The Pinta art fair has established a $150,000 acquisitions fund that will be distributed among eight museums interested in buying contemporary Latin American art, reports the New York Times.
The chosen museums either already have a Latin American collection or have expressed an interest in starting one. They include: the Harvard Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Museum of Modern Art and El Museo del Barrio in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin; the Tate in London; the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires; and the Museum of Art in Lima. Money for the fund was provided by Pinta organizers and by donors, who determined how much each museum will receive. The Tate will receive $15,000, for example, while the MFA Houston will get $25,000. Organizers hope the museums will match the funds they receive. The museums will not receive the money at all if they do not make a purchase. “It’s seed money, a way to get museums interested,” said Mauro Herlitzka, institutional director of the fair, now in its second year. Pinta runs November 13–16 at the Metropolitan Pavilion and the B. Altman Building, both on West 18th Street in New York. |
