The 23-foot-high mural, One Nation Under CCTV, refers to the closed-circuit televisions used as security devices throughout London. It features the title slogan being painted by a youth in a hooded sweatshirt, as a police officer with a camera and a dog stand close by. Deputy leader of the council, Robert Davis, who is also chairman of the council's planning subcommittee, said, "I take the view that this is graffiti, and if you condone this then what is the difference between this and all the other graffiti you see scrawled across the city?" Art critic Rupert Mass defended Banksy, saying "he is doing something that is quite valid" and that the work makes the city "vibrant and interesting." Banksy's sketches have sold for thousands of dollars at auction, and last week one of his paintings, Tesco Value Tomato Soup sold for £117,600 at Bonhams auction house in London. |
