It is unclear whether the decision to withdraw from Art Cologne is a response to the decline in the world economy or to the decline in the fair's popularity. Deutsche Bank has agreed to continue to support the Frieze Art Fair in London.

The bank assures that it is not backing out of the arts altogether. “We are not abandoning our engagement to art — on the contrary,” said the bank’s representative, Klaus Winker. “Art belongs to the five key fields in our corporate social-responsibility plan. But that doesn’t mean that we always want to leave everything here the way it was.”
