Welsh Collection of Impressionist Art to Tour U.S.

Published: November 5, 2008
A new touring exhibition will bring one of Wales’s finest collections of Impressionist masterpieces to the U.S. for the first time, the BBC reports.

“Turner to Cezanne: Masterpieces from the Davies' Collection” presents 58 works that once belonged to Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, two sisters who purchased progressive French art in the early 20th century and bequeathed their vast collection to Wales's national museum upon their death. The exhibition is jointly organized by National Museum Wales and the American Federation of Arts (AFA).

Welsh Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones said he hoped the show will help his country’s tourism industry. "These paintings will not only put Wales on the map at an international level, but will inspire, entertain, and educate millions in the future," he said.

The show begins its tour next March at the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina and then travels on to spaces in Oklahoma City, Syracuse, New York City, Washington D.C., and Albuquerque.
