A recently rediscovered Caravaggio will be at the center of a new exhibition of the English royal family’s collection of art at the Queen's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the Times (London) reports.
The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew, thought to have been painted in 1604 or 1605, depicts the scene from the Gospel of Mark when Jesus said: “I will make you fishers of men.”
For decades, the painting was kept in a side room at Hampton Court Palace. In 2001, a restoration of the painting began, in part to satisfy the curiosity of academics who speculated about the attribution of the piece, which was previously thought to be a copy. After a cleaning that removed dirt and overpainting from previous restorations, the painting was identified as an original.
The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew joins another “lost” Caravaggio, the early Boy Peeling Fruit, in the exhibition, titled “The Art of Italy in the Royal Collection.” The show opens tomorrow and runs through March 8, 2009.
