Go West

After five years in the grunge of L.A.’s Chinatown, Javier Peres is expanding to Culver City. The dealer who discovered Terence Koh says it’s time for Peres Projects—which, with the latest addition, now operates seven spaces spread among Berlin, New York and L.A.—to move up to the Westside. “For me, it feels more like a concession,” says the Cuban-born Peres, 36. “The people who not only are engaged with the art but actually acquire it, most of them live on the Westside.”

The new space, at 2766 South La Cienega Boulevard, just two doors down from Culver City pioneers Blum & Poe, opens November 22 with a solo show by Mark Flood, who emerged from the 1980s punk-rock scene but these days makes delicate, lace-motif paintings. The exhibition, “Entertainment Weakly,” will feature L.A.–themed works. Peres, who spent his teenage years in tony Palos Verdes, says he’s not sure what exactly he’ll do with the Chinatown space now that he’s opening in Culver City—but there’s no question he’s keeping it. The lawyer turned gallerist is accustomed to multiple outposts in one city: In Berlin, which Peres considers his headquarters, he already has four.
