This past year, hordes of galleries, museums, fairs and auction houses crossed oceans, time zones and cultural divides to establish outposts in new regions and reach new audiences. A renaissance is occurring in long-dormant cultural hubs of the Western world like Brussels, while art empires are rising in the East in such cities as Beijing and Moscow. With long-haul air travel now the norm, it seems that every place, from Baden-Baden to Bangalore, is upgrading to become a first-class cultural destination.
