Hot Spot: Brussels

Published: December 1, 2008
Dedicated collectors head to the Belgian capital, an hour from Paris, each January for the Brussels Antiques and Fine Arts Fair—a blue-chip event that, now in its 54th iteration, is even older than TEFAF Maastricht. But this civilized city is getting some new blood: The powerful New York gallerist Barbara Gladstone opened there in October. Other additions in the contemporary-art category include branches of the Almine Rech and Nathalie Obadia galleries, both from Paris, and the brand-new Galerie Meessen De Clercq. Private museums got a boost in 2007 when longtime collector Walter Vanhaerents decided to show off his trove, studded with Andy Warhols and Bruce Naumans. And look for a new Magritte museum, the biggest ever, in June.
