Weimar Celebrating 90th Anniversary of Bauhaus

Published: November 24, 2008
WEIMAR, Germany—In celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the governments of the German city of Weimar and the state of Thuringia are planning a series of events, including special exhibitions in Weimar, Jena, Apolda, and Erfurt, reports the Deutsche Presse Agentur. The shows, featuring works by Feininger, Kandinsky, Klee, and Schlemmer, will include pieces on loan from museums in Paris, Moscow, and New York.

"We want to recognize that the Bauhaus developed new standards for architecture, art, and design here in 1919 that were later put into practice all around the world," said Hellmut Seemann, president of the Foundation of Weimar Classics. The foundation is responsible for overseeing the archives of the school, which was founded by Walter Gropius in April 1919 as an alternative to established art schools.

Plans are also in the works for a new Bauhaus museum in 2013. The original Bauhaus buildings, which currently house the Bauhaus University, are classified as a world heritage site under UNESCO.
