Mark Leckey Wins 2008 Turner Prize

Published: December 1, 2008
LONDON— British video artist Mark Leckey was announced as the winner of this year's Turner Prize today, Reuters reports. Leckey, 44, was the only man on the shortlist of four Britain-based artists vying for the £25,000 ($37,000) prize. He draws inspiration for his art from popular sources like Felix the Cat and the sci-fi movie Blade Runner.

"Everything in here is about having something," he said in a space filled with his works, "it's about things that you desire and I desire and my trying to work out my relationship with them. They manufacture my desires, and I want to know why."

The remaining shortlisted artists are Cathy Wilkes, Runa Islam, and Goshka Macuga.
