Architect Glenn Marcus Murcutt Selected for AIA Gold Medal

Published: December 5, 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The board of directors of the American Institute of Architects has selected Glenn Marcus Murcutt for its 2009 AIA Gold Medal. They cited the depth of Murcutt's work and the breadth of his influence, which they said extends far beyond his native Australia.

Murcutt is known for his ecologically responsive modernist suburban and rural homes. He has taken cues from the strict geometries of Mies van der Rohe, the naturalistic modernist revisions of Alvar Aalto, and the vernacular forms of his home country. While he practices exclusively in Australia, his work has an impact on architecture around the world. Murcutt had previously won the Alvar Aalto Medal in 1992 and the Pritzker Prize in 2002.

Tom Howorth, chair of the AIA Committee on Design’s Gold Medal Committee, said few people "can claim sole and original authorship of a convincing body of significant architecture. Standing tallest among those few is Glenn Murcutt."
