Scottish Government to Pledge Up to £10M for Titian Campaign
Published: December 15, 2008
The donation will add to the £8 million already raised from private donors and a recent £10 million donation from the National Heritage Fund. London's National Gallery is expected to donate a further £12 million, and the National Galleries of Scotland another £2 million. The English and Scottish National Galleries must jointly raise £50 million by December 31 in order to purchase Diana and Actaeon from its owner, the Duke of Sutherland, who has lent the painting, along with 27 other works from his collection, to the National Galleries of Scotland since 1945. If the galleries succeed in raising the money, Diana and Actaeon will alternate between the London and Edinburgh institutions, and the museums will then have another four years to raise funds to buy the sister painting, Diana and Callisto. |
