Mass. Lawyer to Serve Seven Years for Possessing Stolen Works
Published: December 17, 2008
A retired Massachusetts attorney who was convicted in August of possessing several paintings stolen in 1978 has been sentenced to seven years in prison, reports the Associated Press.
In addition, the attorney, Robert Mardirosian, 74, must pay a $100,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release.
The works in question were stolen from a local home by a former client of the lawyer. Mardirosian held the works secretly until 1988, then moved them to a Swiss bank and later tried to ship them to London to sell them.
The works have all been recovered, and the owner, Michael Bakwin, has auctioned the most valuable, a Cezanne still life, for $29 million.
