CAIRO—New-media artist
Jennifer Steinkamp will represent the United States in the
11th International Cairo Biennale, opening December 20, 2008, and continuing through February 20, 2009. Steinkamp is known for making computer-generated immersive installations and employing state-of-the-art digital animation. In Cairo, she will exhibit her multi-channel video piece
Dervish (2004–05), as well as
Dervish Cairo (2008), a trio of prints that superimpose the trees used in
Dervish onto photographs of Cairo's urban landscape.
In addition to Steinkamp's solo exhibition, the American participation in the Biennale will also include a program of activities designed to promote international exchange. Organized by Kimberli Meyer, director of the MAK Center for Art & Architecture at the Schindler House in Los Angeles, the program includes projects by a group of Los Angeles-based artists and curators, such as "Animation Buffet," a screening of contemporary experimental animation; "Other Sides of the World," a public round-table discussion; a Web site and blog; and an exhibition catalog.
