Through Sept. 7 Titled "Revolutions — Forms that Turn," the 16th Sydney Biennale is directed by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, chief curator at the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin, and examines the impulses behind revolution — of both the coup d’êtat and spherical variety. Fifty new works have been commissioned by such artists as William Kentridge, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Qiu Anxiong, Pierre Huyghe, Susan Philipsz, and Michael Rakowitz, while Australian artists will also claim a stronger presence than ever before, among them Julie Rrap, Destiny Deacon, Annie Anawana Haloba, TV Moore, Tracey Moffatt, and theweathergroup_U. The ambitious survey will explore all things circular, from actual loops and wheels to the boomerang-like return of the past, to road trippers Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri’s journey along Australia’s perimeter. "Sydney Biennale" originally appeared in the July/August 2008 issue of Modern Painters.
