Photographer Patrick Cariou has filed a lawsuit against Richard Prince, Larry Gagosian, and Rizzoli over Prince's use of a number of Cariou's photographs in recent artworks, the blog Cityfile reports. The works in question were on view at Gagosian Gallery last month in an exhibition titled "Canal Zone" and are featured in a new book put out by Rizzoli.
Cariou objects to Prince's use of his photographs without his consent; he said that in the past Prince has typically appropriated "anonymous commercial imagery," but in this case, Prince has taken photographs that first appeared in Cariou's own book, Yes Rasta, in 2000. They are the result of "ten years he spent in the secluded mountains of Jamaica, gaining access to, living and working with, and earning the trust of the Rastafarians who are the subjects," he said.
