Stay:

THE SPITZ HOTEL
Reopened in January 2007 after a full renovation, the Spitz takes its inspiration from the city’s cultural institutions. Each of the building’s seven floors is designed by local artists and designers with a Linz cultural institution in mind, from the Brucknerhaus concert hall to the new Ars Electronica Center.

PIXEL HOTEL
The Pixel isn’t a conventional hotel, but a new hospitality project from local architects and urban planners. They’ve repurposed six unused spaces throughout the city, including a docked tugboat, an art gallery, a 19th-century communal kitchen, a storefront, and a cabinetmaker’s workshop that’s located off an alley courtyard. The amenities are basic, and guests have to make use of nearby restaurants and cafés for the inclusive breakfast. The room key also comes with a day pass to Linz09 events. It just might be the coolest accommodation in Austria in 2009.

HOTEL AM DOMPLATZ
Opening in April, this 71-room hotel is well placed for culture hounds. There’s a bar and spa in the main building, and the historic houses next door offer additional apartments for guests as well as the hotel restaurant.

WOLFINGER

This 500-year-old monastery became a hotel in 1771, and it has hosted its share of famous personages (Hans Christian Andersen, Anton Bruckner). The amenities are a little dated, but with the central location and the deep history, you might not notice. Ask for a room off the secret courtyard.
