“Where in the World?”
Founded by the collector Anupam Poddar last year, the Devi Art Foundation, with its vast subterranean galleries an hour from the city center, is one of India’s only noncommercial contemporary art centers. Even more rare is its dedication to hosting an ambitious education program. To this end, the Devi has turned curatorial duties over to a team of faculty and students from the School of Art and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. For the Devi’s second major exhibition, the team has selected art from the foundation’s collection that reflects the epic impact of India’s globalization and rapid modernization. Works by Anita Dube, Sonia Khurana, Gigi Scaria, and Subodh Gupta remix local materials — like bindis or cow dung — with new technologies, to survey the startling growth the country has experienced this past decade. "'Where in the World?'" originally appeared in the February 2009 issue of Modern Painters. For a complete list of articles from this issue available on ARTINFO, see Modern Painters' February 2009 Table of Contents. |
