Christie’s Continues to Reorganize

NEW YORK—Christie’s auction house, which recently initiated a company-wide “reorganization” that has included layoffs and the elimination of certain departments, is organizing its internal departments.
According to the New York Times, the house will combine its departments of 19th-century European art, Old Master paintings, Old Master drawings, and British drawings into a single department called Old Masters and 19th-Century Art. “Our collectors have never seen 19th-century pictures and Old Masters as separate collecting categories,” said Nicholas Hall, international head of the department. “Our aim is to put together sales that offer the best of the best of art between 1300 and 1900.” The change, however, will apparently only take place in the New York office; in London, the departments will remain separate. Meanwhile, more information has been revealed about the Christie’s layoffs announced earlier this month. According to the blog Art Fag City, the house offered additional severance to employees who signed a contract saying that they would not work for rival houses Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury for a year. The site also speculates that more layoffs are coming at Christie’s, citing previous examples in which downsizing occurred in several waves. |
