Four paintings by acclaimed Scottish painter Peter Howson were stolen from a local residence on Monday, January 19, along with some jewelry, reports BBC News. Each of the paintings measures 10 by 12 inches and is valued at a four-figure sum. They all depict “The Hardman’s Face,” a reoccurring subject in the artist’s work.
Howson, 50, studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He became established in the 1980s, affiliating himself with the New Glasgow Boys, a group of painters interested in social issues. He was Britain’s official war artist during the Balkans conflict. Howson is known for his powerful figurative work; his collectors include celebrities such as Madonna, who has also appeared as the subject in some of his work.
