Dealers, Auction Houses Team Up for London Master Paintings Week

LONDON—A group of Old Masters dealers are teaming up with auction giants Christie’s and Sotheby’s to launch a new event called London Master Paintings Week, the Art Newspaper reports.
The event, which runs July 4–10, will include a series of gallery openings and is timed to coincide with Old Masters sales at both auction houses. The new program appears to be modeled after London Old Master Drawings Week, a nine-year-old event that is held at the same time. According to Konrad Bernheimer of Colnaghi & Co., one of three dealers who initiated the project, the event is an alternative to the Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair, held in mid-June. Bernheimer says that he will not participate in this year's edition of the fair after more than two decades exhibiting there. “This is a different kind of cooperation from a fair, but it is not new,” he said. “The Carré Rive Gauche dealers in Paris started it, and the Munich dealers do it as a joint effort. It creates momentum for interest in Old Masters paintings and sales. Together, we have an enormous amount of expertise, and this series of special exhibitions will draw attention to London. No one refused to participate.” In addition to Bernheimer, Johnny van Haeften and Jonathan Green of Richard Green helped to initiate the project. Other participating dealers include Agnew’s, Verner Amell, Charles Beddington, Simon C. Dickinson, Ben Elwes Fine Art, Derek Johns, Matthiesen Gallery, John Mitchell Fine Paintings, Moretti Fine Art, Philip Mould, Rafael Valls, Robilant & Voena, Michael Tollemache Fine Art, Trafalgar Galleries, William Thuillier, Weiss Gallery, and Whitfield Fine Art. |
