Fairey Arrested Outside ICA

Published: February 9, 2009
BOSTON—Shepard Fairey was arrested Friday night as he was about to enter the Institute of Contemporary Art to give a performance, reports the Boston Globe. The museum is currently hosting an exhibition of his work.

Police arrested the renowned street artist on two outstanding warrants for property defacement, one for an image pasted on a railroad trestle under the Boston University bridge and one for a work in the city's Allston area. A representative for the Boston Police likened the acts to graffiti.

The 38-year-old, Los Angeles–based artist rose in prominence and popularity as a result of his Obama Hope image, commissioned by the presidential campaign based on another original work by the artist. He's long had an underground following as a street artist who papers cities worldwide with his propaganda-inspired imagery.

The ICA's Web site has an online map showing where more than a dozen such works can be seen around Boston, though neither of the sites for which he was arrested are included.

Fairey, who has told the Globe that he's been arrested at least 14 previous times, was to guest DJ at a dance event called "Experiment Night," which had sold out more than 750 tickets. He spent the evening in a lockup in Boston's South End before being bailed out Saturday morning. Fairey is to face charges in a Boston courtroom today.

The exhibition, "Supply and Demand," runs through August 16.
