Published: February 17, 2009
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Internationally recognized video artist Bill Viola has been announced as the recipient of the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts by the Council for the Arts at MIT. He will receive the $75,000 award at a public presentation on March 10 at the MIT campus.

Viola, whose work deals with themes of the human experience, such as birth, death, consciousness, and the path to self-knowledge, will also spend one week in residency at MIT starting March 9. The McDermott award was created in 1974 to honor Eugene McDermott, co-founder of Texas Instruments and a long time supporter of the arts at MIT. It recognizes an artist working at the highest level of artistic achievement in order to enhance and stimulate creative activity at MIT.
