BMWs and Beyond

Published: February 17, 2009
LOS ANGELES— The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, threw a one-of-a-kind bash this past weekend to celebrate its new Dan Graham retrospective, "Beyond." The event, a special members' opening, boasted Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth as headlining guests, making it an extremely hip option for Valentine's Day festivities. Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, famed music producer Kim Fowley, and L.A. music journalist Lina Lecaro were also in attendance to appreciate Graham's work, which is on view at MOCA through May 25.

And earlier in the week, at the not-so-far-away Los Angeles County Museum of Art, four of 16 existing BMW Art Cars went on display for a brief 12-day run. Designed by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, the cars were presented by Stephanie Barron, LACMA's senior curator of modern and contemporary art; curator and design historian Christopher Mount; and Shawn P. Ticehurst, BMW's marketing and events communications manager. Visitors can check them out at the museum until Feb. 25, after which they'll travel to New York's Grand Central station.
