Zhang Xiaogang is China's Most Valuable Artist, Report Says

Published: February 27, 2009
Based on their auction prices, Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun, and Zeng Fanzhi rank as the top three most valuable living Chinese artists, reports Bloomberg, citing the findings of the China-based Hurun report.

Zhang grossed $44.1 at auction last year, Yue $30.5 million, and Zeng $30.1 million.

Zeng still boasts the record for most expensive Chinese contemporary painting ever sold at auction, for his Mask Series 1996 No. 6, which fetched $9.7 at Christie's Hong Kong in May.

A survey released by London-based ArtTactic Ltc. earlier this month predicted that prices for Chinese contemporary art may fall in the next six months, however, as global economic woes decrease consumer confidence.
