Alex Katz: Artist Turned Model

Published: March 3, 2009
NEW YORK—American artist Alex Katz has found a second calling: menswear model for J.Crew. Katz appears throughout the label's new spring catalog, lounging in his studio in J.Crew outfits. His image also appears on the cover of the men's catalog and in huge store window displays, according to the Mediabistro blog UnBeige.

The clothing company has also drawn on art for its spring women's collection, with a Web site statement that reads: "We created an entirely new color vocabulary combining the Pop art of Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Hockney with the dreamy Impressionist work of Manet, Monet, and Degas."

"The result," it adds, "is a collection that's a work of art in itself."

Last April, J.Crew shot its 2008 spring catalogs on location in Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House, which Christie's auctioned off for $16.8 million at its postwar and contemporary sale a month later; the sale, however, fell through.
