Last Year’s Bald Archy Winner Takes Satirical Prize Again

Published: March 9, 2009
CANBERRA, Australia— James Brennan has won the satirical Bald Archy prize for the second year in a row, reports the Australian Associated Press. Brennan, who took home the AUS$5,000 (U.S. $3,160) award in 2008 for his portrait of the Danish royal family, won this year for his painting of Bart Cummings, an Australian racehorse trainer.

Old Owl Eyes Is Back, as the work is called, shows Cummings with heavily accented eyebrows and hair, holding a pair of binoculars.

The competition for this year's Bald Archy, which spoofs the prestigious Archibald Prize and is allegedly judged by a cockatoo named Maude, included 97 entries from around Australia, among them a painting of artist Bill Henson in the nude and Nicole Kidman with her face covered by a Chanel hijab.
