The building was constructed by Wright when he was 87 at the request of a couple who met him while taking an architecture course at Stanford University, Randall "Buck" and Harriet Fawcett. It is a cinderblock structure that forms a shallow, angular U and includes six bedrooms, four and a half baths, and a swimming pool. Construction on the house, which encompasses about 3,700 square feet on approximately 80 acres, began in 1955 and was completed in 1961, two years after the architect's death.

Although the house is not one of his best known works, experts say it is "an articulate expression of his design philosophy at the latter stage of his career," according to the Chronicle.

Ron Scherubel, the executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy in Chicago, said: "It's kind of the ultimate statement of his innovative idea of creating what he called a purely American-style architecture. This one is all angles and glass and concrete blocks. At the time, it was clearly an expression of ultra-modern design."
