The Jazz Century

When Piet Mondrian arrived in New York in 1940, he discovered boogie woogie and his painting style forever changed. "Gone were the somber black lines, replaced by small yellow squares, which added a rhythm to how he was dividing the canvas," relates Daniel Soutif, the curator of this sprawling survey of jazz-related artwork from the past century. "So much of visual art relates to jazz." With nearly 10,000 objects — including painting, comic strips, musical scores, record sleeves (including the one pictured, designed by experimental filmmaker Michael Snow), and photographs, as well as music — this exhibition is a spirited celebration of improv and all that is hep to the jive.
