YSL’s Partner Yanks Portraits from Warhol Show

Published: March 16, 2009
PARIS—Yves Saint Laurent's partner Pierre Bergé has withdrawn four portraits of the late fashion designer from a major Andy Warhol exhibition in Paris just four days before its opening, Agence France-Presse reports.

According to the AFP, Bergé objected to the positioning of the four works, from 1974, in a section of the exhibition titled "Glamour," which includes portraits of designers such as Giorgio Armani and Sonia Rykiel. Bergé said Saint Laurent should be in the section called "Artists."

"I don't think Yves Saint Laurent comes under the category of 'glamour,'" Berge said. "I don't deny he was a designer, that was how he described himself, but I think he was more than that."

He asked organizers to reconsider the placement and withdrew the works when told that a rearrangement was not possible.

The exhibition, titled "Warhol's Wide World," brings together 150 works by the Pop star, many of which are being borrowed from private collections such as Bergé's and shown for the first time. It opens at the Grand Palais on March 18 and runs through July 13.
