Chinese Artist Speaks Out Against His Government
Published: March 20, 2009
In angry comments about the earthquake posted on his blog, Ai has criticized the government for not providing a full account of reasons for the deaths of over a thousand schoolchildren, which he says were due to badly built schools. "I'm really tired of this bull," the artist told the New York Times. "I went there, and I saw the school building collapsed, and next to it is a building that is fine." So far, Ai has posted more than 1,500 names of children who died in the disaster, as well as transcripts of conversations he and others have had with government officials who refuse to release information. Though nearly 10 months have passed since the earthquake, the Chinese government still has not released a figure for how many children died under the rubble. Many angry parents in Sichuan say that the school buildings were unstable and blame government corruption for the faulty construction, but their protests and demonstrations have been largely broken up and quieted. Several Chinese journalists said that the government basically restricted them from reporting on the subject of questionable school construction after the event, yet somehow, Ai's blog continues to go uncensored in China. Ai added that he hopes to get the names of all of the victims by the one-year anniversary and to create a documentary on the earthquake. |
