Stolen Egyptian Paintings Found Near Scene of the Crime
Published: February 11, 2010
Artworks stolen 10 days ago from the palace of Mohammed Ali Pasha in Cairo have been discovered near the scene of the theft, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur reports.
The nine paintings depict scenes from the life of Mohammed Ali, the Greek-born ruler of Egypt from 1805 to 1848. The works have been displayed in the palace, which is sometimes called the Egyptian Versailles, since it was restored in late 2005.
“Security authorities informed me that they found the paintings near the palace after the police received an anonymous phone call,” said a happy Farouq Hosni, the Egyptian minister of culture.
Hosni added that the paintings would be moved to art museums, with copies remaining in the palace to “maintain the style of the museum.”
There was no word on the identities of the thieves.
