"The Collectors," The Nordic Pavilion and the Danish Pavilion, 53rd Venice Biennale 2009, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset

VENICE— For the upcoming 53rd Venice Biennale, the Nordic and Danish Pavilions have jointly commissioned artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset to curate a project spanning the two spaces. This is the first time an artist, or artist team, has represented two national pavilions at the high-profile event.

Michael Elmgreen, who is from Denmark, and Ingar Dragset, who is from Norway, have worked together since 1995, and their work has appeared in museums, galleries, and public spaces around the world. For Venice, they will transform their two nations' pavilions into domestic spaces that will tell the stories of "Ingmar Bergman–style family dramas" haunting the fictional home.

Also collaborating on the project are some two dozen international artists, including Hernan Bas, Maurizio Cattelan, Tom of Finland, Terence Koh, Klara Lidén, Jonathan Monk, Nico Muhly, Henrik Olesen, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

The Venice collaboration was initiated by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway and the Danish Arts Council, both of which are commissioners of their respective booths. It will be on view to the public from June 7 through November 22, 2009.
