New York art dealer Lawrence Salanderwas indicted this morning, the New York Times reports.
The specific charges against Salander, who was arrested at his home in Millbrook, N.Y., were not released, but in January it was reported that a New York State grand jury was considering criminal charges against the dealer.
In fall 2007, more than a hundred lawsuits were brought against Salander and his now defunct Salander-O'Reilly Galleries by former clients and lenders accusing him of pocketing proceeds of art sold on consignment, failing to deliver promised investment profits, and reneging on loans, bills, and credit-card charges.
Salander and his wife, Julie, and the gallery declared bankruptcy in November 2007 amid some $50 million worth of claims against him.
