Two Mexican Frida Kahlo experts are claiming that five paintings attributed to the artist are fakes, the Associated Press reports. The paintings recently surfaced in a private collection in western Mexico.
The charge has been made by Carlos Phillips, the director of three Mexico City museums devoted to Kahlo and her husband, artist Diego Rivera, and expert Josefina Garcia. Though the claim is not final, they say that the size of the paintings, the brushwork, and other characteristics do not match up.
"Frida is producing more after her death than when she was live," Phillips said.
The collector could not be reached.
