The pavilion will be an aluminum building with a reflective roof that "undulates across the site, expanding the park and sky," according to the architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. The roof will also slope down in places, from as high as 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) to as low as 1 meter, "so that people can use it as a table," said Julia Peyton-Jones, director of the Serpentine Gallery, which launched the pavilion project in 2000. The structure will also have transparent walls. The pavilion will be erected in London's Hyde Park in early July. This is the 10th Serpentine pavilion, all of which are self-funded projects lasting a maximum of six months from invitation to completion. The pavilions are paid for by sponsorship, sponsorship in kind, and the eventual sale of the structures. Previous designers include Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and Frank Gehry. |
