Brandhorst Museum to Open in Munich in May

Published: April 3, 2009
MUNICH— After seven years of planning and construction and some unexpected delays, the new Brandhorst Museum in Munich has announced that it will open to the public on May 21.

The state-funded museum contains the modern and contemporary art collection of Udo and Anette Brandhorst, which now comprises more than 700 artworks, including 60 paintings, sculptures, and drawings by Cy Twombly, a range of works by Warhol, and examples from Beuys, Polke, Baselitz, Richter, Malevich, Schwitters, Nauman, Hirst, and Basquiat, among others. The Brandhorsts also own 112 original editions of books illustrated by Picasso.

The museum is housed in a building designed by the Berlin architecture firm Sauerbruch Hutton that has gained attention for its striking facade made of 36,000 brightly colored ceramic rods.

Admission will be free from May 21 to 24, after which it will be €5–7 (roughly $7–9) Monday through Saturday and €1 on Sundays.
