Leonardo Portrait Unveiled in Italy

Published: April 6, 2009
ROME— Italian art historians unveiled a newly discovered portrait of Leonardo da Vinci at a press conference in Rome last Thursday, CBC News reports.

The 60-by-45-cm (23 ½–by–17 ¾–inch) painting, which is damaged by scratches, shows Leonardo as a middle-aged man with a serious expression on his face and long, flowing hair that blends with his beard. The artist is unknown.

Medieval historian Nicola Barbatelli discovered the work last December while studying the art collection of a southern Italian family. Carbon dating of the wood around the canvas suggests that the picture was done in the late 15th or early 16th century, but experts have cautioned that the age of the wood does not necessarily correspond to that of the painting.

The work will be exhibited in Vaglio, Italy, from April 8 through August 31.
