Jim Dine Donates Drawings to the Morgan

Published: April 6, 2009
NEW YORK— American Pop artist Jim Dine has promised a series of works on paper to the Morgan Library & Museum, according to the institution's Web site. The series, "The Glyptotek Drawings," consisting of forty works, was produced by the artist in 1987–88 and was strongly influenced by Greek and Roman sculpture, specifically from the Glyptothek Museum in Munich.

The 73-year-old Dine discusses the inspiration for the classical-themed drawings on the Morgan's site: "In creating this work, I did not want to draw the ancient sculptures as dead objects, as stone," he says. "I wanted to put life into them and make them vigorous and physical. I have long had a great romance with the ancient world, and these works are an expression of that." As for choosing the new home for the works, Dine explained that the New York–based Morgan is "an institution I have long admired."
