David Adjaye to Design National African American Museum
Published: April 14, 2009
Adjaye, along with his partners for the competition, Freelon Group, Davis Brody Bond, and SmithGroup, beat out five other architectural teams featuring such big names as Diller Scofidio and Renfro, Foster and Partners/URS, and Moshe Safdie and Associates. The museum, which is expected to cost $500 million and open in 2015, will occupy a five-acre area near the Washington Monument. It could be the final major structure erected on the mall. The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established by a 2003 act of Congress and has been collecting artifacts ever since. |
