"Les seins miraculeux" (2001). Photograph and text. 39 x 49 in. and 20 x 20 in.
Brussels May 27 – September 13 Many artists would be daunted by the task of distilling their life story into a museum exhibition, but not Sophie Calle, who has a knack for making art from her intimate experiences. In Brussels, she has brought together 40 of her most personal projects from 1979 through 2008. Among the pieces on view are two 2008 works, from her "Où et quand?" series, that incorporate handwritten notes, video, photography, and souvenirs from visits she made to two French towns; a third part of the series has been commissioned for the show. Calle’s boldest attempt at self-exposure, though, is the photography-and-text series "Autobiographies" (1988-2003), in which she flashes everything from her breasts to her failed marriage for the camera. "Sophie Calle" originally appeared in the May 2009 issue of Modern Painters. For a complete list of articles from this issue available on ARTINFO, see Modern Painters' May 2009 Table of Contents.
