No Rest for a Weary Shepard Fairey

Earlier this week, a Boston Municipal Court clerk-magistrate dismissed seven of 17 standing charges against the street artist, best known for his iconic Obama "Hope" poster, citing lack of evidence. His lawyer, Jeffrey Wiesner, said that it couldn't be proved that Fairey was responsible for the public posting of his stickers and other materials, which are widely available on the Internet and elsewhere. Wiesner said that the new charges, which stem from complaints from a Boston police detective who found more of Fairey's images on city property, also cannot be proven, on the same grounds. "There are no witness. There's no anything," Wiesner said. Fairey was scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges Monday, but "paperwork glitches" forced a delay, Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, said. If convicted, Fairey faces up to three years in prison. |
