Chuck Close's portrait of Arne Glimcher
On his
way to Paris, where he will stare out from the wall of the
Centre Pompidou as if he owned
the place, is
PaceWildenstein head honcho
Arne Glimcher. Not Glimcher the man but his mug,
painted large by
Chuck Close, a longtime Pace artist. Last year Glimcher donated the picture, from 2000, to
the
Centre Pompidou Foundation, an American group that supports the museum.
Also donating were eight other U.S. collectors and dealers, including
Georges and
Lois de Menil,
who contributed a
Larry Poons piece. According to Close, Glimcher, who bought his portrait after
it was finished, was an exception to the artist’s rule. "I don’t like the
subjects to own the paintings," says the famously independent artist. "I never do
commissions. I don’t want to feel like I’m working for a living."
