New York Gallery Expands to Berlin
Published: April 22, 2009
Moeller Fine Art Berlin will open on April 28 — just in time for the city's annual Gallery Weekend Berlin, kicking off Friday, May 1 — in the Belle Epoque Palais Eger on Tempelhofer Ufer 11. Designed by architects Gustav Knoblauch and Hermann Wex in the late 19th century, the space has a special art-world significance: In the 1980s and '90s collector Hans-Hermann Stober turned its carriage house into a meeting place for the Berlin art scene. The gallery, remodeled by architect Thomas Kröger, will open with "Ouverture," a multi-media group show featuring contemporary artists Adel Abidin (Iraq), Mildred Howard (U.S.), Jeanne Silverthorne (U.S.), Tom Molloy (Ireland), Matthias Düwel (Germany), Eric Fonteneau (France), Hubertus Gojowczyk (Germany), and Piero Dorazio (Italy); as well as masterworks by Kandinsky, Klee, Duchamp, Gino Severini, and Mark Tobey. On view alongside "Ouverture" is "Your Uncle Feininger: Comics, Fairy Tales, and Toys," investigating "little-known aspects" in Lyonel Feininger's work. A German native, Achim Moeller opened his first gallery in London in 1972 and moved to New York in 1984. The Berlin space will be directed by his daughter, Stephanie Moeller. The opening shows will be on view through June 20. |
