Marc Newson Sets Design Record at Phillips

Published: April 30, 2009
LONDON—Marc Newson set an auction record for a living designer at Phillips de Pury & Co. in London today, when his Lockheed Lounge sold for a whopping £1.1 million ($1.6 million), lapping its pre-sale estimate of £500–700,000.

The chair, which was used in Madonna’s music video for "Rain," is a "seminal piece," said Alexander Payne, design director at Phillips. “The total result of the sale bears witness to the fact that the market for important and rare pieces of international design continues to grow.”

Another top earner in the 168-lot sale was Newson’s set of four “Komad” wall lights, which raked in £61,250, more than double their high estimate of £20–30,000.
